The power of touch in the animal kingdom: Study reveals the role of touch in sustaining friendships and cooperation
Key elements of the caring touch hypothesis. Credit: Trends in Ecology and Evolution (2025). DOI: 10.1016/j.tree.2024.11.017 An international research team led by the University of Constance and Oxford Brookes University has concluded that gentle touch is not only good for your mental health, but also good for developing collaborative relationships. The power of touch and social connections helps people cope…

Investigating the role of valence electrons in the magnetism of molecular crystals
Using synchrotron infrared light and near-infrared/visible laser without applying a magnetic field, we observed the response of valence electrons in the (Câ‚‚Hâ‚…)(CH₃)₃As(Pd(C₃Sâ‚…)â‚‚)â‚‚ crystal. The results revealed that about half of the valence electrons contribute to antiferromagnetism, while the other half form weak pairs associated with charge ordering and lattice distortion. By comparing the valence electron configurations identified in this study…

Researchers highlight the role ‘workhorse proteins’ play in keeping the nervous system running smoothly
Hsc70 retards SNAP-25 aggregation. Aggregation kinetics of SNAP-25 (50 μM) at 37 °C. The optical density of SNAP-25 was recorded at 360 nm in the absence (black) and presence of Hsc70 (5 μM, red) and Hsc70+CSPαJ (5 μM each, blue). Hsc70 (gray) and CSPαJ (dark gray) alone do not show aggregation. Credit: Journal of Biological Chemistry (2024). DOI: 10.1016/j.jbc.2024.108001 A…

Migration intentions: The interactive role of emotional polarization and dyadic political attitudes.
Predicted probability of a respondent answering “Yes” about their intention to migrate within 5 years for different combinations of spouse’s political attitudes and respondent’s emotional polarization. Lighter colors in the contour plot indicate lower levels of migration intention (approximately 0% answered “yes”), and darker colors indicate higher levels of migration intention (about 0% answered “yes”). (approximately 24%). ). Credit: Population,…

Shedding light on snow’s important role in Earth’s climate system
Credit: Pixabay/CC0 Public Domain EU researchers are venturing into extreme arctic conditions to uncover the important role of snow in the Earth’s climate system. The average temperature is -30 degrees Celsius, and there is darkness for up to 24 hours a day. These were the working conditions of a team of scientists who spent nine months studying Arctic snow. Snow…

Important role of structural defects revealed in deformation of amorphous solids
Yellow and red areas in the image indicate structural defects, and white circles indicate particles damaged by external stress. These particles involved in the deformation process occur preferentially in regions containing structural defects. Credit: Dr. Vijayakumar Chikkadi’s Research Group Researchers from Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Pune and CSIR-National Chemical Laboratory (NCL) Pune have shown that macroscopic…
