“Honey, do you think this costume looks good?” Is it the best policy to be honest to ask for a deeper question? The answer of the truth may be offended and may lead to quarrel, but unauthorized people can cause trust problems. Does communicating the truth strengthen or backfires a romantic relationship?
Bonnie Le, assistant professor at the Faculty of Psychology at the University of Rochester, may have an answer based on recent research, including more than 200 couples. Her team’s research in Journal Social Psychological and Personality Science is paying attention to the role of honesty in a romantic relationship.
This study expresses honesty and recognizes sincerity among romantic partners who share information threatened by so -called relationships, based on a romantic conversation between romantic partners in the lab environment. I examined the effects of identifying sincerely. Specifically, the research participants talked about the changes that they wanted to see on the other hand in a one -on -one conversation with their partners.
discovery? Please tell me the truth.
Of course, most of us value honesty in our close relationship, whether romantic or not. Sincerity is helpful to create connections and promote intimacy. However, if you share potentially intimidating information, such as “I really hate it when you do X” or “I want to do Y instead”, you may hurt your partner.
However, according to the Rochester team, in the long term, it has some positive effects, expressing and recognizing honesty.
“To be honest, it is more honest to express desirable changes in both partners, and to increase the motivation of partners that change at that moment. I found it, “says LE. “The same pattern appeared when a person who received the request to change the sincerity of the partner, regardless of whether the partner is honest or not.”
Along with Rochester’s graduate student Princeton Chi, Claire Simshock, and Jenny Le, he doesn’t fully understand each other’s sincerity. I discovered that I did not fully understand the simple act of expressing honesty and being recognized as honest, or not accurately recognizing it. Other partners have a positive effect on the relationship and contribute to the overall happiness. Efforts to be essentially true are more than perfect accuracy in their perception.
“These results are honest and honestly suggest that honest partners can benefit the relationship,” Le says. “Even when the truth may be hurt.”
One warning: These discoveries are based on a relatively good couple sample, according to LE. Future research may consider whether to apply to couples who are suffering the same pattern.
