Nanoparticle-based approach targets inflammatory cells for obesity treatment
As reported in a recent study published in ACS Nano, researchers at the Terasaki Institute for Biomedical Innovation have developed a new nanoparticle-based therapy for the treatment of obesity. This innovative approach targets inflammatory cells in adipose tissue, modulates the immune system, and promotes browning of adipose tissue. This study addresses the global obesity epidemic and the limitations of current treatment options.
The study, led by Dr. Alireza Hassani Najafabadi, introduces PLGA nanoparticles (Sim-NPs) loaded with simvastatin for local delivery to adipose tissue. In laboratory experiments and mouse models of diet-induced obesity, these nanoparticles demonstrated potent anti-inflammatory effects, enhanced macrophage polarization regulation, and induction of adipose tissue browning. This treatment effectively suppressed obesity-related inflammation, controlled white fat production, and resulted in weight loss.
Dr. Hassani Najafabadi said, “By using nanoparticles to deliver simvastatin directly to adipose tissue, we were able to target the inflammatory process that causes obesity while reducing systemic side effects.” The novelty of the research results was emphasized.
“This research exemplifies our commitment to finding innovative solutions to pressing public health challenges,” said Dr. Ali Kademhosseini, Terasaki Institute Director and CEO. he added.
The team’s next steps include preparing additional preclinical studies to further optimize the nanoparticle delivery system and evaluate the efficacy and safety of the treatment. This monotherapy approach offers potential advantages over traditional delivery methods and may contribute to the development of more effective obesity treatments in the future.
