Researchers at Sichuan University have developed a new type of epoxy resin that not only enhances fire delays, but also provides recyclable and degradable properties, making them ideal candidates for high-strength adhesives in a variety of industries .

This innovation addresses a key gap in the market for thermoset polymers that can be easily recycled without compromising safety and performance.

The study, led by Professor Li Chen, introduces phosphorus-containing anhydrides into the composition of epoxy resins. It cures using anhydride epoxy cure equilibrium as an exchange modifier with ethanolamine.

This process allows the epoxybitrimer and carbon fiber reinforced epoxy composite (CFREC) to be adaptable and reprocessable, allowing for more easily decomposition of heat and moisture. This work has been featured in the Frontier of Chemical Sciences and Engineering.

The new epoxy resin stands out with its exceptional flame delay, achieving a glass transition temperature (TG) of 192°C. This is important for applications in the aerospace, automotive and wind power industries where materials must withstand high temperatures. Furthermore, the ability of resins to deteriorate in water at 200°C without the need for external catalysts is an important step towards a more environmentally friendly recycling process.

One of the key highlights of this study is the successful recycling of carbon fibers from intact composite materials. This is a challenge that has plagued traditional CFREC recycling. Recycled fibers maintain their structural integrity and degraded products are used in creating recyclable adhesives with peel strength of 3.5 MPa, indicating the potential for a circular economy in the use of epoxy resins. It’s been done.

The social and environmental values of this study are profound. With the global problem of plastic waste reaching critical levels, the development of sustainable thermoset polymers is more important than ever. This epoxy resin not only reduces contamination, but also provides a resource-saving solution by allowing for the reuse of degraded products.

The novelty of this research lies in its multifaceted approach to material development. By integrating fire safety, recyclability and high performance into a single material, researchers have created a game changer for industries that rely on epoxy resins. From construction and transportation to electronics and renewable energy, the potential applications are enormous.

In conclusion, epoxy resins developed by a team at Sichuan University represent a major advance in materials science. It offers sustainable solutions to the recycling challenges faced by thermoset polymers, while providing excellent performance characteristics. As the world moves towards more sustainable practices, this innovation could pave the way for a new generation of material that is not only functional but also friendly to the planet.
