NASA astronaut Dom Petitt used a camera with low light and long-term settings to capture images of the Milky Way appearing across the Earth’s horizon on January 29, 2025.
At the time, the International Space Station orbited 265 miles above the Pacific Ocean off Chile just before sunrise.
Pettit is part of the crew of the Expedition 72 along with NASA astronauts Suni Williams, Butch Wilmore and Nick Hague. Orbital residents explore a variety of space phenomena that benefit humans on Earth, including pharmaceutical manufacturing, advanced life support systems, and genetic sequences of microgravity.
