Millions of people in the southeastern United States are still reeling from the devastation caused by Hurricanes Helen and Milton, but scientists warn Atlantic hurricane season is not over yet. I am doing it.

“We continue to have a very busy situation when it comes to hurricanes making landfall in the United States,” said Jeff Masters, a meteorologist with Yale Climate Connections. To date, five hurricanes have made landfall in the United States, a record of six.

Masters said the record could be achieved because tropical cyclone activity is expected to be above normal for the remainder of October and November.

Hurricane season officially ends on November 30th and peaks from mid-August to mid-October due to warmer ocean waters. Masters said the highly active period will continue into November due to favorable upper-level winds in the atmosphere and record-high ocean temperatures.

“I think there will probably be a couple more named storms by the first week of November, and at least one of them will likely be a hurricane,” Masters said.

“We shouldn’t let our guard down because (the Gulf of Mexico) continues to be pretty unusually warm for this time of year,” said Chris Horvat, assistant professor of Earth, environmental and planetary sciences at Brown University.

Warm ocean waters above 80 degrees Fahrenheit (26.6 degrees Celsius) generate hurricanes, but other factors necessary for hurricane formation, such as favorable upper-level winds, ultimately contribute to the formation of these massive storms. is suppressed.

“The Caribbean is warm enough to generate hurricanes year-round, but strong upper-level winds prevent hurricanes in the winter,” Masters said.

It is essential to continue to be prepared until late in the hurricane season. “As the oceans get warmer due to climate change, we expect to see more high-end hurricanes, and we expect them to form later in the season as well,” he said.
